Torreon

Torreon is located in the state of Coahuila and it is one of the Mexico's youngest cities. The city was officially established as a city in 1907, when a train station was built there during President Porfirio Diaz’s industrial movement.

Torreon is part of the Comarca Lagunera, made up of 15 municipalities in the states of Coahuila and Durango. Torreon is known as the "City of Great Endeavors" for its prosperous commerce and industry. It´s most important industries are metallurgy in lead, silver and zinc processing, as well as milk production, textile manufacturing and electrical and automotive parts production. Because of this, Torreon is a popular host city for industrial congresses, conventions and business meetings.

The city’s Historic Center offers a number of sites and attractions, including the Carmen Cathedral, the Casino de la Laguna and the beautiful Martinez Theater. Torreon is also famous for its Christ of Noas that overlooks the city from a nearby hilltop. Similar to the Christ statues overlooking Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and Cochabamba in Bolivia, the Christ of Noas is the third largest of its kind in the world. It is visited by religious tourists and groups throughout the year.

Torreon has a number of meetings facilities for hosting events, including the University Cultural Center with space for up to 900 people and the the Centenario Coliseum with space for up to 7,220 people. Another option is the The Camino Real Torreon which has 124 guestrooms and suites and 5 meetings rooms; the largest space holds 400 people. Torreon Marriott Hotel has 146 guestrooms and suites, and 7 meeting rooms; the largest fits 400 people.

Mountain Moments at Cerocahui

Set among towering pines, Cerocahui is a peaceful mountain village. Cerocahui is a quiet little town nestled up in the mountains and surrounded by tall pine trees. When traveling aboard the El Chepe railroad, you need to get off at the Bahuichivo terminal; from there, buses depart to Cerocahui. Its historic downtown is home to the San Francisco Javier Mission, a temple built by Jesuits in 1680. Only a few steps away, you can find the boarding school where you’ll hear Tarahumara children singing in their native language. Cerocahui is the ideal destination for those looking for adventure sports and eco-tourism activities.

Creel: Gateway to the Canyon

Creel is the springboard into two marvelous worlds: the magical universe of the Tarahumara and the breathtaking Copper Canyon. Mother Nature has blessed the town with gigantic rock formations, romantic lakes, endless forests and spellbinding waterfalls. At the heart of the Main Plaza you'll find a statue of the town's namesake, Enrique Creel. At the northeast corner of the plaza, the neo-gothic Cristo Rey Church and its neighbor, the twentieth-century Nuestra Señora de Lourdes Church await your visit. Glory Days and Legends at Batopilas

Take a stroll down memory lane in Batopilas. Batopilas, a small town nestled in the Western Sierra Madre at the bottom of a cliff has tales to share. It’s home to beautiful plazas and bridges built of rope and river rocks, but the main surprise is a beautiful aqueduct built in the 19th century. Walk its streets and Batopilas will reveal stories about the discovery of silver deposits and its glory days during the Porfirio Diaz era when its most notable buildings were erected, such as the impressive City Hall and the San Miguel and Shepherd Haciendas. Visit La Bufa mine. Saint Michael Archangel Temple is another emblematic building with a triple dome that dates back to the 17th century.

Shop for Unique Handicrafts

The Raramuris express their creativity and inventiveness working with materials such as clay, wood, and textiles. From these raw materials they create crockery, baskets and kitchen wares, as well as the typical Mexican wood and cloth dolls. The village of Juan Mata Ortiz is famous for pottery that uses the ancient techniques applied by the artisans of Paquime. This town is home to potters of exceptional talent whose work is renowned for its complex designs. Other Raramuri specialties include woven palm-leaf baskets, decorative objects and furniture carved from wood.

Get your adrenaline kicks by river rafting through the canyons River rafting on the various tributaries is one of the main attractions in the Copper Canyon. Papigochi River boasts some incredible rapids. It is located on the canyon’s northern region. Its water volume is catalogued as level III. You’ll want to hire a guide. On the Urique River, close to the town of Divisadero, the rafting is classified as level IV, depending on the season. This one is not for beginners.
