Hermosillo

Hermosillo is the capital of the northwestern state of Sonora and it’s also known as Sun City due to its average annual temperature of 77º F. It is surrounded by desert, ecological reserves, a dam, and is close to the Sea of Cortez. Hermosillo is 168 miles south of Arizona and is also a short 45-minute drive from Sonora’s pretty beaches like: San Carlos and Rocky Point.

Hermosillo has a number of cultural and arts centers. The most important is the University of Sonora’s Library Museum which houses the Regional Anthropology and History Museum, the Archeology Museum, the Emiliana de Zubeldia Theater, and an art gallery, in addition to the library.

The Sonora Ecological Center is on the outskirts of the city. With 21 million square feet, it has over 300 plant species, 200 animal species, and an Astronomical Observatory.

The city's largest convention center is the Expo Forum. Inaugurated in 2004, Expo Forum has a total surface area of 559,723 square feet, including 99,027 square feet of exposition space, 21,527 square feet of space for congresses and conventions, and a 193,750 square-foot forum for concerts and spectacles.

Hermosillo has dozens of 3 to 5-star hotels, including the Fiesta Americana Hermosillo with 221 guestrooms and suites and 96,875 square feet of event spaces divided into 6 rooms. The largest room measures 71,375 square feet. Another option is the Holiday Inn Hermosillo which has 100,000 square feet of event spaces that can fit up to 700 people and 132 guestrooms and suites.

The city´s International Airport (HMO) has direct flights to Los Angeles, and Phoenix, as well as flights to Mexico's major cities: Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, and beach destinations like Rocky Point, Guaymas, Mexicali and San Jose del Cabo.

Party at the Edge of the Sea

At the afternoons and nights, walking through the jetty provides the perfect opportunity to feel the sea breeze, contemplate the horizon and enjoy a tasty dinner. Recently remodeled, the main tourism corridor of Rocky Point gathers souvenirs shops, restaurants, bars, cantinas and other establishments of tourism interest. It is a cultural space where natives and visitors attend to have fun, take a drink, eat some seafood dish or just for a walk with a unique landscape as background: the Sea of Cortez. Along 450 meters, establishments where local craftsmanship is sold open their doors, ideal to buy a souvenir of the trip; traditional food restaurants, which mainly consists in seafood prepared in different ways.

Fantasy Beaches

Rocky Point draws visitors for its fine beaches, water sports, fishing, and desert-by-the sea beauty. Calm, warm water conditions are ideal for swimming and boating. Unique tidal conditions characterize many area beaches, creating some incredible tide pools filled with aquatic marine life. Windsurfing conditions are ideal from December through April. Fishing is best during summer months, but something is biting year-’round. If you enjoy eating seafood more than chasing it, the city's seafood market, near downtown on the seafront, Calle Alcantar, attracts visitors packing coolers and ice. Prices for fresh fish and shellfish are very reasonable. Diving options are somewhat limited to a few rocky outcroppings, plus a popular island with a sea lion colony.

CET MAR Aquarium, an excellent choice to spend a day in family, allows to know the rich marine fauna of the region. Coasts of Rocky Point, are an important refuge of sea life. Its calm waters house a large variety of species of flora and fauna, for which these have been declared as an ecological reserve in order to preserve the aquatic diversity that, nowadays, is endangered. In the beaches El Mirador, La Cholla, Las Conchas, Playa de Oro and Playa Bonita, besides of natural reserves such as Estero Morua, it is possible to find tiny crabs, colorful sea shells, snails and sea cucumbers under the rocks or dragged by the waves.

Delicacies prepared with fresh seafood and meat are served in the tables of Rocky Point... do you feel like eating some shrimps au gratin? After swimming in the calm waters of the sea, explore its depths or taking the sun in the soft sand, what about calming the hunger with some fresh shrimps, oysters in their shell or a tasty zarandeado fish? At Rocky Point, the most popular dishes are those prepared with freshly harvested seafood. Costa Brava shrimps are offered in the restaurants; these are covered with cheese, wrapped in strips of bacon and fried. They are served with a sweet apple sause, butter, honey and wine, and accompanied with salad or rice.

Estero Morua, Premises of Biodiversity

Estero Morua, where oysters are produced in an organic manner, is the shelter of a large variety of species of birds, crustaceans and reptiles. There are so many options of eco-tourism tours that hardly can be covered in a single trip to Rocky Point. An alternative consists on visiting Estero (estuary) Morua, a beautiful lagoon of 1 103 hectares of extension which is the home of birds, fishes, crustaceans and other aquatic animals. On exploring the land surfaces and crystalline waters of the estuary, it is common to find colorful birds, either resident as well as migratory, in this place. The trip can be performed aboard of a boat or a kayak.

Desert: Vastness and Life in El Pinacate

A tiring journey but extremely enriching is the one that makes us get deeper in the Sonora desert, which landscape is formed by volcanoes, large sandy surfaces, and a clear night sky. In no other place of the Mexican territory reigns the silence with such deepness; for this reason and for many other, thousands of visitors from all over the world gather here to live an experience out of the ordinary. El Pinacate –which takes its name from a black beetle which lives here–, is a natural protected reserve which is found in the core of the Great Desert of Altar, a fraction of the huge Sonora Desert. With a surface dominated by more than 500 craters, it was here where NASA tested the lunar vehicle that it would use in the Apollo space program.

Numerous establishments open their doors on the jetty where craftsmanship made of sea shells, carved wood and vegetable fibers are sold. On returning home, why not taking a small piece of paradise with us? We can choose among a large variety of creations elaborated by the craftsmen of the region and which are sold in stores, markets and galleries. A large number of stores open their doors on the jetty, but it is possible to find open establishment practically in any corner. In these spaces we can find decorations made of sea shells and snails, pieces of ceramic, hardware, jewelry and figures carved in hard wood (dolphins, sheep and turtles, among other animals).
