Tuxtla Gutiérrez

A natural treasure transformed into a city, with plenty to discover

Tuxtla Guttiérez is the capital of the state of Chiapas, located in the south of the country. It has a warm and humid climate, with rains in summer and early October. All around it there are countless eco-tourism activities on offer.

A visit to Tuxtla Gutiérrez will leave you with exciting memories of times spent with indigenous communities, rappelling in canyons and kayaking on its extensive rivers.

A stroll around the streets of Tuxtla Gutiérrez is inevitably accompanied by the sound of marimba music; in restaurants and public squares this instrument gets locals on their feet as well as tourists who like traditional music.

Very close to the capital of Chiapas lies the archeological zone of Chiapa de Corzo, which is an ancient ceremonial and administrative center that has been in existence for 3,500 years, and includes buildings where the Zoque governors lived. It also hosts the Fiesta Grande de Chiapas (Great Festival of Chiapas), declared Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.

The tourist attractions of Tuxtla Gutiérrez and its surroundings are gifts of nature in themselves. In the Cañon del Sumidero and the Cerro Mactumactzá State Reserve you can admire the region’s flora and fauna, as well as taking relaxing walks through caves with painted walls.

More adventurous spirits can go on mountain biking rides, magical rafting trips or rappel down the walls of imposing canyons.

Meanwhile, for those who like to add a few days fishing onto their trip a visit to the Nezahualcóyotl reservoir is to be recommended, where the waters of the La Venta, Negro and Grijalva rivers merge, and where you can catch macabi, catfish, black sunfish, white sunfish and other species such as bay snook.

To give a more anthropological touch to your trip, head for the Panamerican highway and along the route to San Cristóbal de las Casas from which you can take off into the sierra to where indigenous groups live in isolated villages and still preserve their languages, such as Tzotzil, Tzeltal, Chol  and Zoque.

Choosing Tuxtla Gutiérrez as your next destination has another incomparable bonus: its native cuisine made with all-local ingredients and recipes marked by folk tradition.
