Tlaxcala

Small in size but great in wealth

Despite being the capital of the smallest state in the republic, the city of Tlaxcala is great in terms of tradition, history and natural beauty.

Founded in the year 1208 AD by the nomadic Chichimeca ethnic group, the city of the Tlaxcalatecas was one of the nations that resisted the expansion of the Mexica empire and preserved its independence.

The colonial city was founded on top of the pre-Hispanic one between 1519 and 1524 and thanks to the fact that the Tlaxcalatecas were great allies of the Spaniards it grew rapidly, so much so that it became the seat of the first bishopric in New Spain.

Thanks to this intense development during the colonial period, the city of Tlaxcala is the proud guardian of a significant architectural heritage.

The state of Tlaxcala is located in a region crossed by the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, which joins the Pacific ocean with the Atlantic by way of a belt of mountain ranges and plains traversed by ravines.

With a temperate climate and imposing landscape, to the east it borders on the flanks of the Sierra de Huamantla and to the west with the Sierra Nevada.

Its northern and southern extremes are crowned by two volcanoes, Huintetépetl and Malintzin, which dominate the view from wherever you are in the city.

Tlaxcala is ready to astonish visitors with history, architectural gems and landscapes; yet the real treasure of this region is its people.

The inhabitants are hospitable and always prepared to celebrate their customs and traditions.

This is probably why Tlaxcala is a place rich in festivities that has caught the eye of travelers since time immemorial.
