Hermosillo

The Sun City shines majestically in the middle of the desert

The beauty of Hermosillo is the main reason it is called the Sun City. Located in northwest Mexico in a semiarid climate region, it is the state capital of Sonora.

A growing city with more than 250 years of tradition and history, Hermosillo is a subtle blend of 19th-century colonial architecture with the flavor of modern urban development.

Hermosillo has excellent tourism services and a variety of sites of interest. These include the Catedral de la Asunción (Cathedral of the Assumption), a splendid Neo-classical building, as well as the Palacio de Gobierno (City Hall), with a display of paintings illustrating local history. Nearby is the Sonora Museum, housed in the former prison, with 18 rooms of local history exhibits.

If you like exploring, you can find extensive nature reserves such as the Centro Ecológico de Sonora (Sonora Ecological Center), an environmental research and conservation site. There is also the Reserva Especial de la Biosfera Cajón del Diablo (Special Biosphere Reserve) only an hour and a half from Hermosillo.

If you visit Hermosillo you won’t want to miss the cave paintings at La Pintada. Indigenous people of ancient times left graphic evidence of their spiritual and physical life in the form of rock paintings of animals, geometric shapes and many other symbols that have not yet been decoded.

And if you visit in baseball season, don’t miss the chance to cheer for the Hermosillo Naranjeros at Hector Espino Stadium.
