Sport fishing in Puerto Vallarta is a favorite activity. The waters are teeming with fish, making it a top destination for fans of rods and reels or those who want to test their skills in professional tournaments. International competitions are staged here, such as the Nautical Festival and the Fishing Tournament in March, and the International Marlin and Sailfish Tournament in November.
To avoid endangering the ecosystem, a catch and release system is in place for some species; you let the fish go after weighing and measuring them, all to maintain the natural balance.
This catch and release system is in place for the blue, black, and striped marlin, dorado, sailfish, bull fish and rooster fish, among others. And catches of red porgy, snook, red snapper, and sierra are limited to personal consumption.
Fishing in Puerto Vallarta can be a solo adventure or one for the entire family. And, apart from the famous Marina Vallarta, other accessible locations include Yelapa and Mismaloya to the far north.
Beginners can go on outings organized for those new to the sport, with the support of an expert crew.
