Camping in Copper Canyon

Set up camp on the shores of a lake, at the canyon’s summit or down in its depths

Camping in Copper Canyon is one of the most spectacular and ideal places to pursue this activity, mainly for its stunning scenery, but also for its huge biodiversity, lakes, waterfalls, and paths.

All along most of the canyons you can find perfect spots to pitch a tent, so the hardest decision is which to choose – at the summit, on the mountainsides, or down at the bottom of the canyons.

Lake Arareko is one of the two top campsites and one of the most picturesque settings in the entire Tarahumara mountain range; this body of water is just under two miles across and surrounded by a densely wooded area of pine and oak trees.

The other site is at Batosarachi, a town on the shores of Lake Arareko with special places to camp or – if you prefer – cabins, which offer visitors more comfortable lodging.

Both destinations are just three miles from the town of Creel, also reachable by train. You can find campsites in the middle of the canyons themselves as well. However, to get there you first have to hike a long way or go on horseback.

The best season for Copper Canyon camping is in spring or autumn, as the winters are particularly harsh in this area.
