The arts & crafts in Zacatecas, including silver, minerals, textiles, and more, are both beautiful and original.
The Centro Platero de Zacatecas (Zacatecas Silver Center), located in the former Hacienda de Bernárdez in the city of Guadalupe, is an initiative for promoting crafts. It functions as a training school for teachers working in gold and silver. IDEAZ, the Instituto de Desarollo Artesanal de Zacatecas (the Zacatecas Craft Development Institute), is the primary promoter of craft production in the state.
In addition to silverwork, ceramics and pottery, stone carving, textiles, leatherwork, and pita and lechuguilla fibers are also recognized.
Great gifts to take home include carved wooden items; ironwork; basketry; blown glass; resin; papier mâché; carved stone pieces; gems; and metals like copper, iron, and gold. Other special gifts include pyrographed leather items, handmade wooden furniture, miniature furniture, plaster figures, and glass chaquira beads.
Also available are traditionally made foodstuffs like agave-based drinks, and traditional candies. These popular crafts in Zacatecas combine both indigenous and Spanish traditions.
