Traditions and festivities in San Miguel de Allende maintain a close link to Spanish-influenced traditions, as can be seen in the “Sanmiguelada," a celebration comparable to the Spanish “Pamplonada," which takes place in September as the central show within the religious festivities of Saint Michael.

Thousands of brave young men, locals and foreigners alike, dressed in white and with a small red scarf tied round their neck, take to the streets attracted by this exhilarating celebration. When the bulls are set free to run, the mass of adventurous souls run through the streets, chased by the raging bulls. Visitors can take part in the running of the bulls, although it may be a better idea for tourists to observe this fascinating event from nearby hotel and restaurant balconies.

In June, there is also a festivity celebrating Saint Anthony of Padua. On both occasions, there are fireworks, music, and processions. During Easter, Our Lady of Sorrows is venerated with a best-decorated altar competition. Around the same time, St. Patrick’s Day is also celebrated. For that occasion, there is a parade, as well as Irish food tasting and music.
